Tyre Size Explained: Width, Profile, Diameter and Fitment
Tyre numbers contain more information than they first appear to. Learn what width, aspect ratio and wheel diameter mean, how they work together, and what should be checked before choosing a different tyre size.
Tyres complete the wheel package
Changing wheels is only half of wheel fitment. The tyre adds the sidewall and tread around that wheel, so its dimensions affect the complete rolling diameter, wheel-arch clearance, appearance and the chance of contact. A different diameter can also influence indicated road speed, effective gearing and systems that compare wheel speeds, while sidewall and construction choices contribute to how the car rides and responds.
The markings on the sidewall help describe the tyre, but they do not approve it for a particular car. Wheel width and offset, suspension height, steering movement, load capacity and the vehicle manufacturer's guidance all remain part of the decision.
How to read 245/40 R18
The markings moulded into a tyre sidewall contain more information than the three values people usually quote. In 245/40 R18, 245 is the nominal section width in millimetres, 40 is the aspect ratio, R identifies radial construction, and 18 is the wheel diameter in inches. A complete marking normally continues with a load index and speed rating. Those ratings matter when selecting a replacement even though they do not change the basic visual proportion.
Each part of the code depends on the others. A 40-profile tyre does not have a fixed sidewall height, because 40 means 40 percent of that tyre's nominal width. An 18-inch wheel tells you which wheel diameter the tyre is made to mount on, but it says nothing by itself about wheel width, offset, brake clearance or whether the total package suits the vehicle. Reading the code is the start of a fitment check, not the conclusion.

Tyre width is a nominal measurement
The first number describes the nominal section width measured from sidewall to sidewall under a defined test condition. It is not necessarily the width of the tread touching the road, and a tyre labelled 245 can measure differently from another 245 when fitted to a different approved wheel width. Construction, sidewall shape, rim protection and manufacturer tolerances all influence the installed shape.
A wider tyre can create a fuller-looking wheel arch and may be appropriate for a wheel and vehicle designed for it. It also occupies more space on both the inner and outer side of the wheel package. Increasing width without checking the wheel's approved tyre range can distort the sidewall, while choosing a tyre that is too narrow can create unwanted stretch and reduce protection for the rim. The tyre maker's fitment data and the wheel's width are therefore as important as the number printed on the sidewall.
Wider does not automatically mean more grip. Compound, construction, temperature, pressure, road conditions and the vehicle setup all influence available traction. Width must be selected as part of a suitable tyre and wheel package rather than treated as a performance guarantee.
Aspect ratio sets the sidewall proportion
The second number is a percentage of the nominal section width. For a 245/40 tyre, the approximate sidewall height is 245 × 0.40, which is about 98 mm. That height exists above and below the wheel, so both sidewalls contribute to the tyre's approximate overall diameter. The calculation is useful for comparison, but the tyre manufacturer's published dimensions are more reliable for a final decision.
Because the value is a ratio, a 40-profile tyre becomes taller as its width increases. A 275/40 tyre has an approximate sidewall height of 110 mm, not 98 mm. This is why matching only the profile number can accidentally change overall diameter. A shorter sidewall can make the wheel appear larger and may change steering feel or impact sensitivity, while a taller sidewall can add visual mass and require more arch clearance. Those are system-level choices rather than purely cosmetic ones.
Wheel diameter is measured in inches
The number after R is the diameter of the wheel seat the tyre is designed to fit. An R18 tyre mounts on an 18-inch wheel; it cannot be substituted onto a 17- or 19-inch wheel. This mix of millimetres for tyre width and inches for wheel diameter is normal in modern tyre markings, even though it makes the overall-diameter calculation less intuitive.
Moving to a larger wheel does not have to make the complete tyre taller. Many replacement packages use a lower sidewall to keep the overall diameter close to the vehicle's original specification. That approach is often called plus sizing. It still needs an appropriate wheel width and offset, correct load and speed capability, brake clearance, usable sidewall, and enough room through steering and suspension movement. A larger wheel can also be heavier, so appearance should not be the only consideration.
Overall diameter and rolling circumference
An approximate overall diameter can be calculated by adding two sidewall heights to the wheel diameter. For 245/40 R18, the sidewalls contribute about 196 mm. An 18-inch wheel is 457.2 mm, giving an approximate total diameter of 653.2 mm. Multiplying that result by pi gives an approximate unloaded circumference of 2,052 mm. Real published values can differ because a mounted, inflated and loaded tyre does not behave like a perfect geometric circle.
A meaningful diameter change can affect more than the gap around the tyre. It may alter indicated road speed, effective gearing, ride height, clearance and the behaviour of vehicle systems that compare wheel speeds. Different front and rear diameters can be especially important on vehicles whose drivetrain or stability systems expect a defined relationship. The original equipment specification is the reference point, and any alternate-size limit should come from the vehicle or tyre manufacturer rather than a generic visual rule.

Why tyres rub
Rubbing is usually the result of several dimensions meeting at the same point. A wider tyre may sit closer to the strut or arch. A lower wheel offset can move more of the package outward. Tyre deflection, passenger or luggage load, bumps and body roll can remove clearance that looked adequate while the car was parked.
The exact shape of the tyre matters too. Two tyres sharing the same code can have different shoulder profiles and measured section widths. A static side view cannot prove clearance at full steering lock or full suspension compression. Checks must include the inner sidewall, spring and strut, brake hose, liner, arch edge, bumper joints and any fasteners that could contact the tyre. There also needs to be room for normal movement rather than a paper-thin gap.

Checks before changing tyre size
Begin with the tyre placard, owner's manual and manufacturer documentation for the exact model year, trim, drivetrain and market. Record the approved original tyre size, wheel size, load index, speed rating and inflation guidance. If considering an alternate size, obtain the tyre maker's measured diameter, section width, approved rim-width range and load information rather than relying only on an online calculator.
Confirm wheel width and offset, available brake and suspension clearance, and whether the new package remains clear at full lock and through suspension travel. On staggered or all-wheel-drive vehicles, check any manufacturer limits on front-to-rear circumference. Make sure the load capacity and speed rating meet the required specification and that the tyre type suits the intended weather and use.
Have a qualified tyre or automotive professional inspect the proposed combination on the real vehicle. After installation, check inflation, fastener torque where applicable, clearance and alignment, then re-inspect for contact or unusual wear. Local rules may also restrict exposed tread, overall diameter changes or modifications to the body and suspension, so legality needs its own check.
