Exhaust Systems Explained: Cat-Back, Axle-Back, and Headers

The Role of the Exhaust System

An exhaust system routes spent engine gases away from the cylinders and out the tailpipe. Along the way, it manages emissions via catalytic converters and reduces engine noise using resonators and mufflers.

Aftermarket exhaust systems are designed to improve exhaust flow, reduce backpressure, save weight, and enhance the engine's acoustic signature.

Axle-Back Exhausts

An axle-back system replaces everything from the rear axle to the exhaust tips, primarily the rear mufflers. This is the most affordable option and focuses purely on changing the exhaust note and visual appearance of the tips. It offers minimal performance gains.

Cat-Back Exhausts

A cat-back system replaces everything from the catalytic converters back, including the mid-pipe, resonator, and mufflers. This provides a more pronounced sound change and mild performance improvements by using larger diameter piping and mandrel bends to smooth airflow.

Headers and Turbo-Backs

Replacing the exhaust manifold with aftermarket headers (or a turbo-back system on turbocharged cars) yields the most significant performance gains. For naturally aspirated cars, headers replace the restrictive factory exhaust manifold. For turbocharged cars, downpipes replace the piping immediately following the turbo. These modifications offer the most significant performance gains but often require engine tuning to avoid warning lights and optimize air-fuel ratios.

Will an aftermarket exhaust void my warranty?

Usually, axle-back and cat-back exhausts do not void the entire vehicle warranty, but they may void the warranty for the original exhaust components. Modifying emissions equipment (like catalytic converters) can cause warranty and legal issues.

Do I need a tune after installing an exhaust?

Axle-back and cat-back systems generally do not require a tune. However, installing headers or high-flow catalytic converters usually requires an ECU tune to optimize the air/fuel ratio and prevent check engine lights.
